We spent our second day in Hawaii exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Crater Rim drive. Above is a panorama of Mauna Loa volcano! We will be going back sometime this week to go hiking down to one of the craters.
Today, though, we just went on a short hike to some ancient petroglyphs, which were really cool! They were etched into the solid rock and had been there for a really long time. Apparently, those native people lived on the barren volcanic landscape and ate mostly sweet potatoes. The hike was really hot and windy on the dark lava rocks and I’m glad it was only two miles. Any more and I would have needed a sweet potato!
Along our drive we stopped at several scenic viewpoints. There were some really neat steam pots that made for some interesting photos, and some incredible lava (nothing molten so far, just solid black stuff.)
On the way back out of the park, we encountered a tree that had fallen. It took forever for park services to come clear it up, so we were stuck. Another park employee showed us some guavas growing nearby and showed us which ones were ripe. It was our first tastes of fresh, Hawaiian fruit! While we enjoyed those, we noticed some little, wild pigs running around. Dinner and a show! I didn’t get any pictures of them because they were way too quick. I’ll try again next time!
Wow, these are fantastic!!!!!!
